DJ Maphorisa, whose real name is Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, was born on 15 November 1987 in Soshanguve, Pretoria, South Africa. He later became widely known by the stage name DJ Maphorisa and also uses the alias Madumane. He grew up in a musical environment, with his mother involved in gospel music and relatives who were musicians. His mother’s ministry and his family’s connection to music played an important role in his early interest in sound and performance.
Maphorisa developed an interest in music while he was still young. According to accounts of his early life, one of his uncles gave him recording equipment, which encouraged him to experiment with music production. During his teenage years, he began performing at local events, including birthdays, weddings and beauty-pageant functions. These early experiences gave him practical exposure to performing and helped him decide that music could become his profession.
By his late teenage years, Maphorisa had become increasingly focused on pursuing music professionally. He eventually left formal schooling before completing matric and concentrated on developing himself as a DJ and producer. His decision initially concerned his parents, but his subsequent success in the music industry established the career path he had chosen.
DJ Maphorisa Education
DJ Maphorisa’s formal education was interrupted by his decision to pursue music. In a 2018 interview with TimesLIVE, he explained that he did not finish matric and had reached Grade 11 when his first professional opportunity arrived. He later attended college for technical courses identified as A1, A2 and A3 while continuing to pursue his musical ambitions.
His decision to leave school was closely connected to his growing belief that he could establish himself as a professional DJ and producer. Reports about his teenage years indicate that he had already started performing at local functions, giving him practical experience outside the classroom. At around 17, he chose to devote more of his time to music rather than completing traditional secondary education.
Although Maphorisa did not complete matric at that stage, his education in music developed through practical experience, recording, DJ performances, collaborations and production work. He has subsequently built his expertise through years of working with South African and international artists, making his professional musical experience a central part of his career development.
DJ Maphorisa Career
DJ Maphorisa’s professional career began around 2008, initially through DJing and record production. He later became associated with Uhuru and gained recognition for producing and contributing to successful South African records. His production work included songs connected with artists such as Mafikizolo, Kwesta, Busiswa, DJ Zinhle, Professor and Shekhinah. His 2013 co-production of Mafikizolo’s “Khona” became an important breakthrough and helped establish him as a major producer.
His career expanded beyond South Africa through international collaborations. He received a co-production credit on Drake’s “One Dance”, alongside other producers, and has worked with or received production credits involving artists including Wizkid, Black Coffee, Major Lazer, Runtown, C4 Pedro, Focalistic and Kabza De Small. The international exposure from these collaborations helped strengthen his reputation as a producer working across African and global music markets.
A defining chapter of his career came through his partnership with Kabza De Small, with whom he formed the Scorpion Kings. The duo became strongly associated with the international expansion of Amapiano. In 2026, the Scorpion Kings continued their large-scale live performances, culminating in Scorpion Kings Live at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on 19 September 2026. The official event site identified DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small as the headline performers, while IOL reported that more than 70,000 people were expected.
Another significant recent development came on 17 September 2026, when Maphorisa appeared on Podcast and Chill with MacG. The episode covered his career, Scorpion Kings, industry disputes, gatekeeping allegations and the Samthing Soweto situation. During the interview, he also discussed the possibility of having Samthing Soweto perform at Scorpion Kings Live and said he and Kabza De Small were prepared to spend R500,000 to secure the appearance.
